Running a red light is a type of negligent driving

You have probably shared the road with other drivers who were exhibiting dangerous behaviors. This may include speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving and much more. Any of these behaviors can significantly increase the chance of an accident. Some of the most dangerous driving habits, however, can take place at intersections and in places where traffic is moving slower than on the interstate.

Running red lights is a common reason for accidents, and it is a problem that is increasing in North Carolina and across the country. In fact, fatalities caused by other drivers running red lights is at a 10-year high. This is a form of negligence and reckless driving, and it is possible to hold liable parties accountable. If you are a victim of an accident that occurred at an intersection, you could have legal options available to you.

A growing safety concern

According to statistics, at least two people die every day from accidents that happen when a person runs a red light. That is two people too many, as these accidents are completely preventable with safe and cautious driving. A recent study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety looked at data from 2007 to 2017 and found that red-light running is a serious concern.

In 2017 alone, 939 people died from accidents caused by drivers who blew through red lights. You may find it interesting to note that this number represents a 31% increase in these types of accidents since 2009. Many of the people who died in these accidents were passengers in vehicles or were in other cars; they were victims of the choices of another individual

What's the cause?

There could be many reasons behind the sharp increase in red light accidents. Distracted driving may be one factor. People are more distracted than ever before because of everything from their cell phones to in-car infotainment systems. They are not paying attention, so they may not see a light change or slow down enough when driving through an intersection.

Regardless of why a person ran a red light and caused an accident, you have the right to pursue legal recourse after a collision caused by another driver. The civil justice system offers you an opportunity to seek appropriate compensation for certain losses, including your medical bills and lost wages. A court may also deem it appropriate to award you damages for mental and emotional duress as well.
