Are you a defensive driver?

Being out on the road may not be your favorite activity. Many North Carolina drivers, including you, experience anxiety while behind the wheel and when driving long distances. This feeling is understandable as numerous car accidents take place daily, and many of those result in serious injuries.

You undoubtedly already know that staying focused on the task of driving could help you avoid an accident. Numerous other tips could also help you remain a safe and defensive driver, which may help you avoid causing a collision during your time on the road.

What is a defensive driver?

As a defensive driver, you purposefully drive in a manner to reduce the risk of accidents. You certainly do not want to end up injured yourself, and you do not want to cause injuries to others. Because you cannot rely on other drivers to also have this mindset, you need to remain defensive, which could include the following actions:

  • Leaving adequate space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you
  • Braking early and giving yourself more time and space to stop if the roads are wet or other conditions apply
  • Planning ahead so that you understand your route, the weather conditions you may encounter, what traffic is like and how much time you need to reach your destination
  • Avoiding the temptation to give into anger or experience road rage due to another driver's aggressive driving
  • Keeping a level head while behind the wheel
  • Putting away your cellphone and staying focused while driving
  • Keeping your eyes on the road and mind on the task of driving
  • Scanning your surroundings for possible hazards, like other vehicles, pedestrians or animals

Your actions behind the wheel can go a long way in avoiding crashes, but as mentioned, you cannot rely on other drivers to operate their vehicles safely. As a result, another person could cause an accident that leaves you seriously injured.

What can you do?

If you do find yourself injured due to another person's negligent driving, you may want to consider your legal options for seeking compensation. A personal injury claim could allow you to pursue restitution for medical bills and other damages resulting from the car accident that are allowable under North Carolina law. If you would like more information on this civil claim option and to determine whether it could suit your needs, you may wish to speak with an attorney.
