Have you suffered a life-changing TBI?

Few people go through life expecting to suffer a life-changing injury. Unfortunately, this type of scenario could befall anyone, and you may have recently found yourself in this situation. One day, you may have gotten into your vehicle for a normal commute, and later you found yourself in the hospital, possibly with little or no memory of the car accident.

Sadly, car accidents can cause any number of life-changing injuries. In your case, your brain suffered serious trauma, and now you must contend with the many changes your life will now face, including no longer having certain abilities that you once did.

Effects on cognition

As you already know, you brain controls many of your bodily functions. When the brain can no longer send or receive messages properly, you can lose many of your physical and mental abilities. In particular, a traumatic brain injury can severely impact your cognition, or your abilities to understand, use and remember information.

As a result, you may have trouble with a number of life aspects that you could once attend to with ease. For instance, some hardships you could now face as a result of your TBI include the following:

  • Feeling restless
  • Easily succumbing to distraction
  • Difficulty communicating
  • Struggling to follow directions
  • Needing more time to complete projects
  • Trouble remembering new information
  • Making poor decisions
  • Having difficulty pinpointing problems
  • Acting inappropriately or insensitively

While these examples may seem troubling in themselves, they do not represent all of the issues that a TBI could cause when it comes to cognitive function.

Addressing issues

While some cognitive effects of a TBI can prove permanent, actions do exist that could help improve on those issues. Of course, each person and injury is different, and as a result, doctors cannot fully predict how well a person may recover from a TBI. Some types of therapy and rehabilitation commonly used include remediation, in which patients work on improving abilities that have been damaged, and compensation, which involves patients learning new ways to reach a desired result.

Another form of compensation

As you likely already know, it will take you a considerable amount of time, effort and money to work through the issues that your TBI will present. Fortunately, you may have the chance to pursue monetary compensation from the driver considered at fault for the car accident that led to your serious injury. Consulting with an attorney could help you better understand this legal course of action and what types of damages you may pursue.
